Levels and Headroom

Todays talk is about levels and headroom. Where does your gear fit in? Depends on what you are pluggin into and what you are pluggin in. A picture really does say a thousand words so here is a pic that shows level and where your headroom is at. Enjoy.

This is why I love the display on my TV. It starts at about -99 and at about -45 is loud for most channels. Some of the HD need to be boosted all the way to -35...but I probably could'nt make it to zero without some pain:)

As I watch the Bubble 2.0 go buy the change has been apparent in my online social life. I have actually got in touch with people I likely would not have and shared a lot of things with them. All though I am not hearing about a lot of people making a living from it except the advertisers and the people storing the data. My favorite TV channel is Current Tv which is a VC(viewer created) type news show catering to the next generation. Most of the content is suggested or created by viewers and then organized in a tv friendly format much like CNN in the early days.

My advise to anyone in this day and age is to not give up any of your publishing rights to anything or anyone unless you really don't ever want to see or use it again or be able to gain anything from your work. This includes "citizen journalist","Bands"."artists"...etc and any other entity that creates content or media in any form.

Just like with record labels and early bands there are many entities/corporations/scavengers watching and evaluating your data/media to make a profit off of it and then give you pennies on the dollar for it or get it for free which is what most would like to do.

Value yourself, your opinions and your creations because they are yours and yours alone.

What to talk about. well if you are so inclined and want to chat with me I have an embedded meebo window and if I am online then you can chat, no account needed. also if you want to show me your ugly little mug then I have a tokbox embedded so that you can chat and see my sorry looking mug.

I have been looking at getting a new laptop. I am looking at the XPS M1730 which is a gaming laptop and probably good for audio as well. Lots of power for a laptop. The other is from PC Audio Labs and it is built for audio and is pretty sweet. http://www.pcaudiolabs.com/daws_customconfig_image.asp?componentid=576 fast and made for audio right out of the box. I think I will get this and then get a cheapo for web browsing and mail later.

Check out this specs on that bad boy. Probably not the latest processor but still right up there with the best of them.

I will make my decsion today and will likely get the pcAudio labs one---but I have not made the final decision.

All these choices and the more I wait they get better--not a bad deal.

With the economy and coporate layoffs pending ....well...who knows what is going to happen.

All of a sudden I am looking at the options for getting a new pair of speakers I can master with. If I keep doing this and it is going to get more and more fun as I go along. It's hard to explain to people the compromise and decisions that you have to make to get a sub-set of what you would "really" like if there were no price and time barriers. I have done pretty well but I will need to also choose a new interface and that is not going to be easy...do I cave in and go PT-HD or do I go with something else? In the end it really doesn't matter because its all about getting the tracks down somehow and then mixing them and even more so about the performance you are recording.
